Green Member of the European Parliament Ms. Gisela Kallenbach visited Gozo at the invitation of Alternattiva Demokratika, to monitor projects which characterize Gozo as a particular tourist destination. The visit started with a meeting between Ms Kallenbach, AD Secretary General and other Party Officials with the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Gozo, where the concept of 'Gozo as an Ecological Island' was discussed.
Ms Kallenbach lauded the fact that the Maltese Government had taken up the 2007 suggestion by the Malta Green Party to include the concept of Gozo as an Eco Island in its 2015 vision for the Maltese Islands.
On his part, AD secretary general and spokesperson for Gozo Mr Victor Galea assured the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry Mr. Joe Micallef, that Alternattiva Demokratika would support all efforts by the Maltese Government to turn Gozo into a veritable economy based on sustainable projects tailor made for the size and uniqueness of the island.
During her visit, Ms Kallenbacc toured the EU funded Grading Centre, Casa Fungi Ltd, Gozo Cottage Products Ltd all based at the Cooperative of Gozitan Farmers - the Gozitano Ltd
The Green MEP also devoted a part of her time to visit places of cultural and artistic interest including the studio of the Gozo-based German artist Jorg Bottcher in Zebbug and the Gozo Heritage at Ghajnsielem.
During an on-site visit at Ta' Cenc, Hondoq ir-Rummien, Ramla l-Hamra and Dwejra, both Ms. Kallenbach and the AD Officials agree that in order to maintain the high potential of Gozo as a unique island that can produce added value through its specific features, such natural beauty should remain unspoiled and talked on the number of proposals to turn the current controversies over Ta' Cenc, Ramla and Hondoq into job opportunities without destroying the natural environment, our patrimony and the ecology.
