Gozo's capital Victoria will be turned into an open-door museum of cultural, historical, gastronomical and entertaining events at the first Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana - inspired by the successful Notte Bianca and Notte Magica organised earlier on in the Maltese capital Valletta - next weekend between May 18 and 20.
Lejlet Lapsi, meaning the eve of Pentecost, is expected to remain a staple in Gozo's diary of events.
The weekend-long activities have been tailor-made to satisfy the taste and needs of different audiences, young and old. Because of parking space restrictions and to avoid traffic congestions, special land and sea transport arrangements have been made, with shuttle services operating from various towns and villages in Malta and Gozo, coordinated with the ferry, which will be operating at a reduced cost. A special minibus transport service will also be available for the elderly and persons with special needs. The public is being encouraged to make use of public transport for easier access to the compact capital. A leaflet with a detailed schedule of transport arrangements and the different places and activities of interest is being mailed to all households in Malta and Gozo and will be available on the Gozo ferry and from the different information points in Victoria, Gozo.
The area which usually houses the bus terminus in Victoria will be transformed into one open-air restaurant with no fewer than seven Gozitan restaurateurs, confectioners and patissiers offering a rich menu of traditional sweet and savoury delicacies.
Main stages with specific themes will be set up in six different locations, with activities held simultaneously, starting off with a staggered programme peaking in the early hours on Sunday. Re-enactments and street performances will feature prominently in the narrow and winding streets of Victoria, with concerts and recitals taking place in churches and chapels scattered around the town centre.
The events organised on Friday and Sunday will be held within the Citadel in Victoria and the Saturday events extend to most of the main town's medieval streets and squares.
Lejlet Lapsi Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana is being organised by the Ministry for Gozo and the Ministry for Tourism and Culture, sponsored by the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund - Ministry of Finance, Bank of Valletta, Air Malta and Gozo Channel Company Limited and supported by the Victoria Local Council, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Gozo Tourism Association and BPC.
