The 23four youth group of St George’s Basilica in collaboration with the Astra Theatre will premier the original musical Ir-Rebbieh on April 22.
Composed by Joseph Vella, with lyrics by Giovann Cauchi, Ir-Rebbieh is an original musical about St George, depicting scenes from the life of the martyr and illustrating the patronage and the recourse that the Gozitans have sought in St George throughout their turbulent history.
Set in the first centuries of Christianity, this two-act musical brings out the strength and determination of the daring young George who defied earthly ambitions and a career in pursuit of what he believed in.
A large stage and a 100-strong cast, mostly made up of youths, will transform the newly-refurbished Astra into an arena of emotions and expressions. Twenty-three-year old David Camilleri from Victoria will be interpreting the role of the Martyr Saint.
The music was recorded at Philip Vella’s studios in Mellieha, with the main vocal and choral parts interpreted by St George’s basilica’s Laudate Pueri Choir.
Ir-Rebbieh follows the successful production of other musicals by the 23four youth group including Ir-Ribell (2002) and Disney’s Greatests (2003). A CD featuring the two acts of the musical will be made available in due course.
Tickets may be purchased at Lm3 from the theatre’s booking office by phoning on 2155 0985.
