The proceedings against David Zerafa, the man who stands charged with the murder of Gozitan lawyer Michael Grech, yesterday came to a standstill when the accused fainted in the court room.
Mr Zerafa, 31, of Nadur is pleading not guilty to the murder of the lawyer in Gozo in May 2004.
Maria Scicluna explained in court yesterday that she was in an apartment situated on the floor above that of the victim on the day of the incident. She heard a gunshot and a person cry in pain but did not recognise the voice because the person was moving away from the apartment.
As she was testifying, Mr Zerafa fainted and fell to the floor. He was taken to the Gozo General Hospital and the proceedings were put off.
Police Superintendent Pierre Calleja and inspectors Chris Pullicino and Antonello Grech prosecuted.
Lawyer Joseph Giglio appeared for the accused.
