The government did not do all it could to keep the helicopter service between Malta and Gozo in operation, Labour MEP Joseph Muscat said yesterday. In a press statement, Mr Muscat said the government should have used a balanced and sustainable subsidy in accordance with EU regulations.
He pointed out that the European Parliament recently took up his proposal where islands with fewer than 300,000 people can make use of subsidies for air traffic without permission from the European Commission.
Mr Muscat said the Labour Party is ready to make use of these subsidies to help tourism and improve transport between Malta and Gozo.
