Gainfully occupied population up in Malta but down in Gozo

National Statistics OfficeLabour market data for June 2007 indicates that the full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 651 persons while unemployment decreased by 724 persons when compared to June 2006. The full-time gainfully occupied population in Malta increased by 685 persons. On the other hand, the full-time gainfully occupied population in Gozo dropped by 34 persons. The labour supply decreased by 73 persons over the same month in 2006. The full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 651 persons, whereas the registered unemployed decreased by 724 persons. In this way, the labour supply amounted to 146,470 persons. Of these, the full-time gainfully occupied population amounted to 140,133 persons, whilst the registered unemployed amounted to 6,337 persons. Economic sector In the twelve-months to June 2007, the private sector registered an increase of 1,244 persons in full-time employment. Accordingly, the private sector employed 97,527 persons in June 2007. The areas of the private sector which registered the main growth were real estate, renting and business activities (NACE 70-74), other community, social and personal service activities (NACE 90-93), and construction (NACE 45). In contrast, full-time employment in the public sector fell by 593. Accordingly, the public sector employed 42,606 persons in June 2007. The public sector is shedding jobs across the board, with the two main exceptions to this trend being the areas of public administration and defense (NACE 75) and health and social work (NACE 85). Employment status Compared to the corresponding month a year ago, in June 2007 full-time self-employment increased by 129 to reach 16,650 persons. The main increase of self-employed persons occurred in real estate, renting and business activities (NACE 70-74). On the other hand, the number of employees went up by 522 to reach 123,483 persons. The areas which registered the main increase in employees were real estate, renting and business activities (NACE 70-74), and other community, social and personal service activities (NACE 90- 93). Part-time employment On a year-on-year basis, part-time employment rose by 3,372 to reach 46,304 persons. Among part-timers who also hold a full-time job, there were an increase of 1,312 persons, whilst those having a part-time job as their primary occupation went up by 2,060 persons. Apprentices, trainees and students When comparing the figures for June 2007 and June 2006, it transpires that the number of apprentices, students and trainees dropped by 14.9 per cent.
