The Citadel fortifications in Gozo will benefit from a restoration project partially financed through the European Regional Development Fund.
Details regarding this project were given during a public meeting organised on St John's demi-bastion at the Citadel. Dr Stephen C Spiteri, Superintendent on Fortifications within the Restoration Unit of the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, spoke about the importance and of the Citadel and its role regarding the defence of Gozo as the sole fortification on the island. Ms Ivana Farrugia, architect in charge of restoration works at the Department of Projects and Development within the Ministry for Gozo, explained the procedure to be adopted and the works involved in the implementation of the project.
Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that this is an important project to restore and maintain the Citadel and it is the first time that such an extent of walls are being restored. The Minister explained how the funds allotted for this project are part of the European Union funds for Malta for 2007-2013. Government has committed 10 per cent of the total funds for specific projects for Gozo. Gozo is also benefitting from a number of projects being implemented on a national basis. Minister Debono remarked that this project incorporates well within the strategy of the Ministry for Gozo for this unique historical site which, alongside Ggantija, is one of the island of Gozo's prime resources.
During his speech, Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, George Pullicino, spoke about the holistic project, involving a total investment of €36 million which will result in the restoration of a span of 135,000 cubic metres over 6 km of fortification walls. Minister Pullicino stressed the need for the establishment of a 'Fortification interpretation Centre' in our islands. This would not only include a static museum on the fortifications in the country but will also be an interactive centre. The Ministry has asked the restoration unit to identify appropriate central sites where this project may be developed as well as to consider the possibilities for its financing.

I am very happy to hear this great news. I doubt if the funding of 10% only is enough for gozo but I believe it is a great sum of money which is efficiently allocated will benefit Gozitan’s tourism.
Now 2 questions I’d like to ask:
Did the works start?
And are there any projects for the inside?
Such as the horrible state of the art in the cathedral museum and the fields of unused land in the fortress.
