The Employment and Training Corporation has enlarged and enhanced its Job Centre in Gozo. The Job Centre, situated within The Ministry for Gozo Complex in St. Francis Square, Victoria, is an outreach for ETC customers in Gozo and focuses on giving services to both those looking for work as well as employers.
The newly refurbished Job Centre in Victoria was officially inaugurated by the Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, who expressed her satisfaction at the way these services in Gozo have been enhanced. Minister Debono said that such services are essential in meeting the requirements of the labour market on Gozo and that the provision of these premises, now available within the Ministry for Gozo, were set-up to improve the ETC's services through a modernised and fully accessible centre.
The Job Centre offers regularly updated information on the current vacancies in the local market and on the various training programmes offered by the Corporation and other educational institutions. Those seeking employment are given information regarding employment schemes offered by ETC whilst vacancy search at the Job Centre is facilitated through an easy-to-use touch screen computer which also provides information on job vacancies on a national as well as a European level. Job seekers who do not own a computer, may use one of the computers within the premises. The professional staff at the Job Centre also provide assistance to those persons who wish to start registering for work on the ETC register, together with other suggestions on job applications.
The Victoria Job Centre is the main office where employers can register their job vacancies. They can also make use of the premises to hold recruitment job fairs and open days through the support of the Corporation which promotes these fairs on the local media and with job seekers.
Since its inception in the early 1990s, the ETC assumed responsibility for employment and training services in Gozo. Initiatives were taken in order to improve the abilities of Human Resources on the island through the running of courses and schemes co-funded by the Ministry for Gozo and the Structural Funds programme for Malta 2004-2006 under the European Social Fund. A Government scheme, which is presently administered by ETC, is specifically addressed towards creating job opportunities for disadvantaged workers. Through this scheme, those employing workers from this category will be refunded with 50% of wage cost for the first year. A scheme expected to be launched in the coming days will allow for a start-up grant to be given to those who are presently registering for employment who decide to start up their own business activity. Such initiatives directly address the special needs of the labour market in Gozo.
