An Egyptian national, Ibrahim Hafes Ibrahim El Degwi, aged 42, has been jailed for 45 months after a jury found him guilty of stealing from an elderly Xaghra woman's house and causing damage to the property.
Jurors found him guilty of stealing just under Lm400 from the house of Maria Attard, with a verdict of 7 votes against 2. The jury also returned a unanimous guilty verdict over charges of relapsing.
Although the accused was investigated over the subsequent death of the elderly woman, he was only charged with the theft. The prosecution told the Court that the accused had admitted he had stolen from the elderly woman's residence, but had always denied any involvement in her death.
Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono, presiding over the trial, sentenced the accused for 45 months imprisonment.
