Over forty three thousand Euros were collected during the 13th edition of the annual 36 hour MCAST Hair and Beauty Marathon. The Marathon was held in aid of id-Dar Tal-Providenza and the Malta Hospice Movement on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May 2008.
For the first time the event took place in the new Community Services block which is located on the Main MCAST Campus. Around 500 students together with their lecturers from the Institute of Community Services put in all their efforts to make the marathon another success. Besides the hair and beauty services there were several other fund raising activities such as a car wash and a car boot sale. The students also managed to obtain free vegetables to sell from the vegetable market. A group of students following the Care programme camped in the grounds of id-Dar tal-Providenza and helped the staff in the care of the residents.
Other MCAST Institutes also participated in this initiative. The Institute of Mechanical Engineering organised a Car Check Up while students attending the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering provided the 36 hour count down clock. The Institute of Agribusiness sold plants and one of the students, namely Roderick Pace from the Institute of Art and Design, designed this year's poster.
A special marquee was erected for entertainment purposes. The event was televised 'live' on Education 22, Channel 30 and the Family Channel with links on other local stations. As in previous years entertainment was provided by popular local artists and presenters. Other volunteers helped in various other odd jobs.
The event helps students' development, supports good causes and brings about a community spirit within a learning and caring environment, and also forms part of the College's corporate responsibility service for the community.
The 36 hours passed swiftly with no hitches which made it another huge success.
