Amid widespread speculation that the Archpriests of St George's Basilica and the Cathedral were replaced following the ongoing rivalries at last month's Santa Marija feast, the Cathedral band club, the Leone Philharmonic Society, has issued a strongly worded statement, in which it expresses its surprise at the "absurd" change of their Archpriest.
The society emphasised that they see the change as being tantamount to "the flock being denied of its spiritual pastor," adding that over the past 40 years, they have always been consulted with regard to the selection process of a new spiritual leader.
The Society said that the diocese's ecclesiastical authorities did not appreciate Mgr Vella Gauci's invaluable work as Archpriest of the Cathedral.
The society also said that they deplored the arbitrary manner in which the Archpriest they trusted so much had been replaced by someone who has never had any form of connection with the Cathedral's community.
It concluded by saying that the decision would have a negative effect on the community's perception of the Church and appealed to the ecclesiastical authorities to go back on, what they described as, their mistaken decision.

“…the Archpriest… had been replaced by someone who has never had any form of connection with the Cathedral?s community.”
That’s exactly what Rabat parishoners (I’m speaking of both parishes here) were asking for, with their never-ending pique and (sic) religious partisanism! With this un-christian attitude, they have long become the laughing stock for all fellow Gozitans and visiting Maltese/tourists.
One has to wonder, imagine what’s happening in heaven: would St.George and St.Mary be happy to see their supporters fighting it out between each another? Hardly think so…
Let’s hope that this way, such stupid, un-christian and childlish attitude comes to a halt.
