This coming Saturday promises to be a noisy, lively time at the Astra Theatre, when it hosts a massive production of Cindy, the Musical, an entertaining British musical directed by George Mizzi. A modern version of the Cinderella story written by Mike Smith and Wilf Tudor, Cindy offers audiences a string of lovely songs, witty dialogue and some hard lessons and advice for young people who want to get on in life.
This is an unusual production, in that it is being presented by the Agius de Soldanis Girls Secondary and Junior Lyceum, part of the Gozo College. Having started as a Prize Day event, the musical was taken on with such enthusiasm by students and teachers that a full version is now being presented both for schools (on Thursday, the 27th and Friday, the 28th) and the general public (Saturday, March the 29th at 7.30pm).
The cast consists of some one-hundred actors and dancers, mostly students and teachers from the school. In typical fashion, George Mizzi has harnessed a rich field of youthful talent and energy, and with discipline and hard work, he has managed to produce an offering that promises to be larger than its various parts.
This is Mr Mizzi’s first production at the Astra since the highly successful ‘In Holland stands a House’ that was staged last year. As in that play, Julia Camilleri, one of the St George’s parish youth who is in her last year at De Soldanis, plays the lead role of Cindy, with Jorge Bosios as her arch rival Tracy.
Such productions are important not only for their entertainment value, but also as an educational and cultural experience for actors and audience alike. The stage is an excellent platform where young people can discover and develop their talents, and such productions deserve the support of the whole community.
Tickets for Cindy, the Musical may be booked from the Astra Theatre Bar (Mob: 99228229); Agius de Soldanis Secondary/Junior Lyceum (Mob: 79303101; 21556189) and from XT Communication-Entertainment at Tigrija Palazz (21555744).
