The 4th edition of "Carols by Candlelight" by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate is being held on Saturday, December 9th, at St. Augustine’s Cloister in Victoria.
This year the organizers are working hard to present a different soirče of "Carols by Candlelight". The show is going to be presented in a different way from previous years, in order to render each performance a memorable one.
The aim of this fund raising activity is to present a magical musical experience which will keep the audience eager for it from one year to the next. All proceeds will be donated to Dar Guzeppa Debono of Ghajnsielem.
Dar Guzeppa Debono is the home for single mothers who bravely carry and give birth to their children and feel the need of support groups and professional care to help them face moral, social, economic, psychological and even legal difficulties.
The volunteers together with the professional staff work tirelessly to give voice to the unborn child, protect him or her from abortion and help his or her mother to respect life and its mystery.
This concert is being held at St. Augustine’s Church and will change its appearance and make the audience go back in the old age, when lamps and candles were the only means of light to break the darkness of the night. Special light effects together with numerous candles and candelabra suggested and supervised by the artistic director, Austin Camilleri.
This repertoire includes different traditional, popular and contemporary carols with musical arrangements by Mro. Stephen Attard and Mro. Paul Portelli. Various instruments skilfully and professionally played by the Jubilate Chamber Orchestra will be accompanying the Schola during this concert under the baton of Marouska Attard.
Just to mention a few pieces from the contemporary scene: 'The Coming of Christmas' by Prof. Charles Camilleri, the most internationally-renowned Maltese composer, 'Puer Natus' by Dominico Bartolucci who served as Maestro di Cappella at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' by John Rutter who is synonymous with the Christmas Carols and 'God Rest You Merry Gentlemen' which is arranged from an English traditional carol by David Willcocks.
The newly graduated director Marouska Attard will perform solo pieces. Moreover, the organist Joseph Camilleri will interpret an organ 'Pastorale' by Adolfo Bossi.
On this evening of 'Carols by Candlelight', there is also the possibility to spend the night at this unique place. All ensuite rooms have recently been refurnished to assure comfort to all those who would like to experience a night at the convent.
The audience is requested to be seated at least 15 minutes before the start of the performance.
