Wildlife and nature lovers have the opportunity to visit a unique site on the island on Monday, September the 24th. BirdLife Malta will be offering a free guided tour around the area known as l-iRdum Tal Madonna (l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha) where the EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project is based.

This project is the largest conservation project in Malta and sees the collaboration of non-governmental organisations, government authorities and private companies. Malta has around 1,500 pairs of Yelkouan Shearwater, a staggering 10% of the world's population. Around 500 pairs of this seabird breed inside burrows along the cliffs of the project site. The talk will offer an opportunity to find out more about the birds' behaviour, such as how deep they dive, where they go to feed, and how they survive by drinking seawater!

The tour, which is free of charge for interested parties, will last approximately one hour and will consist of a walk around the area with occasional stops during which the project will be explained in detail. The tour will start at 4.30 from near the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at l-Ahrax.
