Road works on the first part of the project aimed at substantially improving the road leading from the village of Nadur to the picturesque bay of Ramla, continued in recent days as the first layer of tarmac, otherwise known as base course, is being applied to a stretch of 1.6 kilometres in the non-residential part of this road.
This phase of the project follows other works which were carried out in recent weeks on this part of the road including the installation of services, the levelling of the road and the formation of walkways. As soon as the first layer of tarmac is complete, further works will ensue including the embellishment of existing passages and rubble walls and the application of the final layer of tarmac.
Visiting the works in progress, the Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo highlighted the importance of this road particularly for Gozitans, Maltese and foreigners who visit the popular Ramla bay during the summer months. This project is one of the many infrastructural projects that are currently underway by the Ministry for Gozo to improve the tourism product offered in Gozo. These include the setting up of a new Tourism Training Facility in Qala, the setting up of the first Crafts Incubation Centre and the extension to the Wistin Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts in Ghajnsielem, the Gozo Citadel conservation project and the construction of the Waste Water Treatment Plant at Ras il-Hobz, limits of Ghajnsielem. These projects follow other projects carried out recently including the Niche Tourism for the Island of Gozo, aimed towards improving the diving product that the island of Gozo offers.
The Ramla road project is one in a series of road projects carried out by the Ministry for Gozo in recent years, complementing the reconstruction of the Ghasri-Zebbug road, the main road to Nadur, part of Marsalforn road and the road leading from Victoria to San Lawrenz, with works on the latter stretch expected to be completed in the coming weeks. Concurrently, the Ministry for Gozo is also implementing a programme of construction and upgrading of several residential roads, while road works on the main route leading from Mgarr Harbour to Xewkija are also moving at a fast pace.
Tenders related to more road works for Gozo were also published in recent days, including tenders related to the reconstruction and upgrading of Xlendi Road and Ta' Pinu road, as well as other three residential roads in Ghajnsielem, Gozo.
