Archaeology exhibition about Mgarr ix-Xini

Mgarr-ix-Xini.jpgAn exhibition displaying the surveying works and archaeological excavations being carried out at Mgarr ix-Xini is being held this coming week with the collaboration of the Xewkija and Sannat local councils, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture as well as the University of Malta's Department of Archaeology and Classic Studies. The exhibition is primarily designed to highlight the unique richness of this area and to emphasise the need to protect it from abuses such as illegal dumping and construction projects. "At the same time, the public will be given the opportunity to appreciate more what is going on, will realise the value of the rich patrimony to be found at Mgarr ix-Xini Valley, and lend its support towards the efforts being carried out to protect it from illegal dumping, waste, and proposed projects which threaten this patrimony" the organisers said. The Mgarr ix-Xini Valley Regional Park Project was launched some years ago by the Xewkija and Sannat Local Councils. As part of the project, an archaeological survey is being carried out, covering the entire Mgarr ix-Xini Valley, while a particular area of the valley, Mgarr ix-Xini itself, is being subjected to archaeological excavations. The survey and excavations are being undertaken jointly by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Department of Classics and Archaeology of the University of Malta, with the collaboration of the two local councils. The exhibition will first take place at the Xewkija Primary School until Saturday the 18th of August. On Monday the 20th of August 2007 the exhibition will continue at the Sannat Primary School hall until Sunday, 26 August.
