Speaking at a Press Conference in Cirkewwa Dr Harry Vassallo Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika said that the provision of a shuttle bus service to and from the airport to Cirkewwa and preferably to the terminal in Mġarr and finishing in Victoria, should be one of the government’s foremost and most urgent priorities.
“Add on a luggage check-in and handling service and Gozo will be able to attract some of the independent travellers using the new low cost flights. What is holding the Government back from at least promoting such a service for the much needed tourists?” asked Dr. Vassallo.
AD Gozo Regional Committee Spokesperson, Victor Galea asserted “It is indeed ironic that the helicopter service came to an end on the same day that Ryanair commenced its flights to and from Malta. The government has showered direct or indirect subsidies to the tune of Lm1 million to make viable the operation of these flights from Malta International Airport.” Mr Galea asked: “How is it possible that the government completely ignored such possibilities for the Malta-Gozo helicopter airlink?”
“Like the Gozo Business Chamber, Alternattiva Demokratika hopes that incentives given to low-cost airlines are extended to companies wishing to operate a helicopter service to and from Gozo. Any new service must include an onward check-in facility. The lack of this seriously disadvantaged Helisureste,” Victor Galea added.
“A catamaran connection between the Grand Harbour and Mġarr would greatly facilitate both commuters and Cruise Liner passengers who want to experience Gozo,” suggested Mr Galea. “For daily commuters from Gozo, it would be feasible to reintroduce an Mgarr to Sa Maison hydrofoil service or the catamaran, at least in the mornings and evenings. Reintroducing the catamaran service between Malta and Gozo is now essential. The catamaran service to Sliema and Sa Maison, available up until some years ago, would afford local commuters, Gozitan workers and tourists alike, a fast, comfortable trip to and from Gozo. If for whatever reason it is not feasible in the winter, it is unquestionably indispensable in the summer!” insisted AD Gozo Spokesperson Victor Galea.
Dr. Harry Vassallo concluded that if the government really believes that Gozo should be marketed as a distinct tourist destination, a direct catamaran service from Gozo to Sicily should be explored. “Innovative thinking and action are required immediately. Gozitans are sick and tired of words - they demand action!” Dr Vassallo said.
