An all night vigil at Calypso’s Cave in Xaghra

Ramblers AssociationAn all night vigil at Calypso’s Cave in Xaghra, Gozo, is being held on Saturday the 23rd of June at 9.00 pm to start the protest against the development proposed at Ramla l-Hamra, which is exceptionally rich in its natural beauty and archaeological heritage.

The peaceful manifestation is intended to highlight how the proposed development will destroy once and for all the quasi-pristine state of the site as it survives from the time of Homer. And how it will irreversibly eradicate the unique cultural asset that attracts thousands of visitors who marvel at the setting as described in that greatest epic of all times, where its hero Ulysses was shored up and dallied in trance as much by the beauty of the place as by that of the goddess.

The vigil is being organized on the initiative of the Ramblers’ Association in collaboration with Flimkien ghal Ambjuent Ahjar, Din l-Art Helwa and other environmental NGOs with the full collaboration of the Xaghra Local Council and the Xewkija Local Council.

All those who have at heart the cultural and natural heritage of Gozo are invited to attend. The peace and tranquility of this hallowed place will be respected throughout the nights vigil, in preparation for the Save Gozo Protest to follow at Valletta on Monday 25th June at 6.30pm.
