Alternattiva Demokratika has praised the initiative by Minister Dolores Cristina to open childcare centres in public schools.
Mr. Mallio Mallia, deputy Chairperson and spokesperson on education and social affairs of AD reiterated ADs stance in favour of family friendly measures both at schools and in the workplace.
"Such initiatives can only be welcomed, and it is refreshing to see that Government is addressing this issue. In Malta female participation in the labour market is the lowest in Europe, and we must address this issue at once. Childcare centres in public schools is definitely one big step forward" Mr. Mallia said.
"Changing family structures has been occurring in Malta for decades, and it is about time to address it. AD believes that these changes are not a sign of a decaying moral fabric, but rather a dynamic change in gender roles, and as such should be seen as a challenge, not a problem" Mr. Mallia said.
Mr. Mallia also augured that such a measure will be one of many to come, since there are other practices that need to be introduced in order to face this challenge. "Whilst we welcome this initiative, we cannot but remind Government about other places where such childcare centres are desperately needed, such as the Gozo General Hospital and the new Mater Dei Hospital. Another measure to be considered is to introduce more flexible hours for working parents" said Mr. Mallia.
AD also suggest that Government consults with the Malta Union of Teachers to ensure that this is implemented through agreement by all stakeholders.
"AD not only welcomes this initiative, but it also promises that a more active female participation in the labour market will be one of its priorities once it is elected in parliament" concluded Mr. Mallia.
