Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) intends to take legal proceedings against the government over the extension of development zones, said the party’s chairperson Dr. Harry Vassallo.
Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Harry Vassallo announced that AD has already filed an official letter in court and will soon be requesting a prohibitory injunction on development in the extended boundaries. The chairperson stated that it intends to sue the government over the rationalization process and is ready to take the case “to the European court if necessary”. AD has already filed a complaint with European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas.
“The prohibitory injunction would ensure that the areas extended are not developed in the meantime. It would be pointless if we simply got a verdict at the end of it, saying that we were right; it would have been simply a political victory,” continued Dr Vassallo.
The proposal for the extension of development zones was approved in Parliament last July with 33 votes against 28 following a heated debate. Through the revision the development zone increased by 1.3%, from the existing one; including local plans such as the construction of new roads.
Prior to the approval of the proposal, Dr Vassallo said that the claims the government had made that it was within the law to make extensions to development zones as proposed were completely unfounded.
