Air Malta has registered a strong performance this winter (November - March ‘08) carrying for the first time in its history over half a million passengers - an increase of 15% over last winter. These results were announced during a press conference held at Air Malta’s Head Office in Luqa to launch the 15th edition of the Air Malta International Travel Exhibition (AMITEX). The conference was addressed by the airline’s Chief Officer Commercial, Dr. Brock Friesen and Brian Bartolo, General Manager Marketing and Product.
Speaking at the press conference Dr Friesen said that these positive results were also reflected by the figures issued this week by the National Statistics Office confirm Malta’s outgoing market has registered an increase of 31.6% in the first two months of this year. This winter, Air Malta remained and consolidated its position as the preferred airline amongst Maltese customers on both scheduled and charter operations.
Dr Friesen gave an overview of the passenger traffic results registered by Air Malta this winter. He said that Air Malta carried 510,000 passengers on flights originating from its Malta base - an increase of 60,000 passengers (+15%) over last winter. Air Malta scheduled traffic rose 11% while charter traffic was up 21%.
This record growth will result into more destinations and frequencies to main European gateways giving the Maltese public better accessibility worldwide. The existing code-share agreements with Lufthansa, Air One, and other airline partners enhance Air Malta’s expanding network. Today the Maltese travellers have daily connectivity via European hubs giving them access to over 180 destinations worldwide. The airline has also implemented over 20 interline e-ticketing airline agreements allowing the Maltese passenger seamless travel with through check in baggage facilities.
Dr Friesen said that this winter Air Malta registered a double digit growth, consistently every month, from November till March - 11% in November, 12% in December, 17% in January, 17% in February, 15% in March. Over 2005/06 Air Malta registered a 22% growth (see Fig. 1 at top of page).
