Marsalforn Works

The Public Transport Authority has informed Infrastructure, Transport and Communications Minister Austin Gatt that it was not satisfied with the road works carried out by the Zebbug local council in Marsalforn following orders to rectify the situation after work had been carried out without a permit.

Following the minister’s instructions, the ADT informed the Zebbug local council that the work needs to be carried out according to standards established by the law within 15 days. The authority said that if the work is not carried out properly, it will undertake to do it itself at the council’s expense.

The ADT has also informed the Malta Environment and Planning Authority that chairs and tables belonging to a tourist establishment have been placed in the square where the illegal work was carried out. Mepa has been asked to enforce the law that falls within its competence.

Dr Gatt said that no public entity, whether it was an authority, local council or other body, was above the law. Furthermore, any illegal work “to benefit somebody” could mean an inconvenience and possibly a danger to other road users. The law applied to all and it was only the ADT which could decide that road works were according to proper international standards.
