"AD welcomes the transfer of 22 Gozitan Police constables from Malta to serve in Gozo" Alternattiva Demokratika Secretary General and spokesperson for Gozo, Mr Victor Galea said.
"It is high time that local enforcement in Gozo was improved, and whilst we appreciate this move, we must keep in mind that Gozo still lacks its full compliment of police officers particularly in the number of Police Sergeants" Mr Galea added.
In a statement in February Mr Galea highlighted the need for more police in Gozo, saying, "The recent robbery in Xewkija where a woman was robbed just a few meters away from the closed police station in Xewkija in broad daylight is just such a case in point"
Mr Galea added "AD addressed the issue of Gozitan Police officers placed in Malta at least twice in recent months."
Dr Vassallo, chairperson for AD said that "it is definitely good news that AD's concerns were taken into account and that action has been taken. This however does not mean that it is enough. The issue of policing in Gozo and the manning of police stations must be prioritized by the Government.
All citizens have a right to expect fair, impartial and effective police protection in their daily lives and police officers are entitled to be trained, supported and equipped in a manner which will allow them to provide just such a service".
