During a meeting of the Gozitan farmers cooperative, the Gozitano Co op, the Gozo Regional Committee of Alternattiva Demokratika, together with the leader of the party, repeated that Alternattiva Demokratika has particular interest in the agriculture and rural development sector. Alternattiva Demokratika and the Gozitan farmers’ cooperative discussed the feasible possibilities in order to improve the farmers’ conditions, among which that we must favour the local produce because it is more fresh and genuine.
AD Gozo Spokesman Victor Galea explained that AD is in accordance with the cooperative Gozitano that agricultural produce being brought from overseas must be carried in refrigeration trucks and the product label must show the production date and place. This is because it must be guaranteed to the Maltese and Gozitan consumer that the product arriving in Malta would still be fresh and not a third-class product.
Dr Harry Vassallo, the leader of the Green Party, praised the Gozitan farmers’ cooperative vision and the way it is achieving funds and resources to the maximum from the European Union in order to improve the fruit and agricultural produce of Gozo while at the same time, the produce and the rural aspect of Gozo are being protected.
Dr Vassallo, while promising full support to the cooperative Gozitano, concluded the meeting by urging the government to place all means at the Maltese and Gozitan farmers’ disposition, decrease bureaucracy, so eventually the Maltese consumer can enjoy these fresh and genuine products.
