Officials from Alternattiva Demokratika led by Chairperson Harry Vassallo reaffirmed what AD has been saying for the past years that one of the biggest pressures on families, especially new ones, is the exorbitant price of property.
This point was explained in a meeting that AD officials had with the Commission for the Family at AD Headquarters. Dr. Vassallo described the situation as scandalous and went on to explain that alternatives need to be sought to the current situation. AD's position in favour of rent reform as a step in this direction was explained.
Dr. Vassallo also emphasised the need for the state to widen its definition of a family unit in an attempt to regularize such units and prevent injustice and marginalization of particular segments of society. Dr Vassallo said that particular emphasis needed to be given to disadvantaged families especially those falling below the poverty line.
Anomalies within the tax system that penalise categories of families, was also discussed. The AD delegation also discussed ways of improving family-friendly measures at the work place and the provision of child-care facilities should family friendly measures not be enough.
The provision of adequate preparation for marriage should be given a helping hand by the state. Dr Vassallo augured that the policy being drafted will pave the way for further inclusion and recognition of the rights of all within families and society. This includes the right for divorce for those who feel they should be given another chance to form a family.
