AD calls for more controls on waste management facilities

ADThe registering of waste management facilities, including scrap yards is a step in the right direction, AD spokesperson for energy and the environment Ralph Cassar said, but this should not mean that all facilities should be considered as ‘temporarily authorised’ automatically and indefinitely. Action to modernise or close sub-standard facilities should be taken as soon as possible.

“Alternattiva Demokratika still insists that a greater effort goes into ensuring that, those facilities, scrap yards in particular, which are notorious for the lack of basic hygiene and adherence to basic environmental health and safety principles are brought up to scratch in as little time as possible,” Cassar added.

Saviour Sammut, AD spokesperson for the South of Malta said “Residents close living close to scrap yards, for example the Bulebel scrap yard which is very close to the Zabbar Housing Estate, suffer from all kinds of inconveniences including noise and pollution by fine particles. Today there are systems to reduce noise and control the emission of particles. Is MEPA considering enforcing some kind of standards as regards these scrap yards and what is the timeframe? Scrapyards which are very close to residential areas should be closed or relocated. MEPA should also consider that scrap yards are located in enclosed spaces to reduce pollution by P10 and P2.5 particles.”
