An unusual Christmas tree was set up in the parking square near San Gwann Parish Church this year. This was made out of 4100 plastic waste water bottles by the students of San Gwann primary - Santa Bernadette under the guidance of their teachers and the artist Joe Barbara
This school has just been awarded the Green Flag award and became the 4th EkoSkola school in Malta to have received such an international eco label award by the Foundation for Environmental Education, FEE, represented in Malta by the NGO Nature Trust (Malta). It was this award that motivated the students of this school to come up with this idea and set up this tree with a particular message to the community and to all Maltese and Gozitans - give a present to our Islands - sort waste ! The children will donate this tree to Ta Qali Park after the festive season.
The tree was officially lit on the 14th of December by the children together with the Hon Minister George Pullicino and the Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Mario Grech. Also present for the event was NTM President and FEE Malta Coordinator Vincent Attard. The tree was lit up after mass was celebrated by Bishop Grech who spoke on the importance of every Christian to care for the environment.
Nature Trust (Malta) commends all the students of San Gwann Primary for their motivation and environmental message and would like to thank their teachers and the artist, the Ministry for Rural Affairs and Environment for their support and HE the Bishop of Gozo for joining the event causing joy to all the children present
The Nature Trust (Malta) Council also would like to wish all citizens caring for our natural heritage a very happy Christmas and thanks them for their support to the environment throughout 2007.
