A ceremony to commemorate the twenty three Gozitans who perished in the Gozo Channel tragedy on October 30, 1948, has been held beside the harbour monument at Zewwieqa, Mgarr.
Wreaths and flowers were laid by relatives, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Carmelo Abela, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, Ghajnsielem mayor Frans Cauchi, Cultural Organisation Committee chairman Vincent Grech, and Gozo Channel chairman Joe Borg.
Bishop Mario Grech later celebrated Mass on board the Gaudos together with the new archpriest of Ghajnsielem, Fr Frankie Bajada, and Fr Eddie Zammit.
After the ceremony Mr Borg presented miniature silver boats to Richard Bates and George Saliba in recognition of their heroic acts when they saved two people from drowning on October 14th.
