Theatre lovers in Gozo are in for yet another treat from director George Mizzi and his team with Neil Simon's The Good Doctor. Inspired by the works of the Russian master storywriter Anton Chekov, The Good Doctor is a collection of some seven 'scenes' or short plays linked together by the character of the Narrator, who intervenes from time to time in the proceedings on the stage as a narrator, commentator, and also as participant. The Good Doctor is a deceptively simple 'comedy' but with very serious undertones; indeed, in Neil Simon's words, 'it can make you laugh as well as cry'.

The stories deal with various aspects of the human condition. Some seem banal, like the opening The Sneeze, or darkly humorous, like The Drowned Man. The Seduction explores love and betrayal, while The Audition presents a young actress auditioning for her first big role.

The Good Doctor is the latest of George Mizzi's venture into drama in English. To his credit, the list includes The Vagina Monologues, Cindy - the Musical, In Holland Stands a House, Kickass Plays, and Confusions. This is yet another opportunity for audiences in Gozo to be regaled with good contemporary drama in the original. The actors are all enthusiastic members of the Gozo Creative Theatre Club, many of whom have recently obtained high grades in examinations set by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

The Good Doctor is going to be staged in an exciting new venue in Victoria, more precisely at the St Ursola Hall, Cittadella Centre for Culture and Crafts, Cittadella, Gozo on Friday 26th September and Saturday 27th September from 7.30pm onwards.
