The Malta Labour Party has expressed its concern that none of Gozo's beaches currently have a blue flag status. To achieve blue flag status, the water quality has to come up to standard and must also be sampled and tested every 17 days.
The MLP said that whilst the government claims to believe in Eco-Gozo, and preaches sustainable tourism, it is clear that the government is not practicing what it preaches, since no Gozitan beach is managed according to this international criteria.
Anton Refalo, MLP spokesperson for Gozo, urged the government to have a more comprehensive and integrated plan regarding the protection and reinforcement of the environment in Gozo. He stressed the need for the government to set up a plan of action, as the effect of the lack of environmental planning is being felt throughout Gozo.
"It is a shame that the beaches in Gozo are being managed reactively. These bays need to be managed in a proactive way that ensures good quality of sea water, safety on land and sea, cleanliness as well as good management of recreation and tourism facilities."
The MLP also urged the local councils, who are responsible for the local beaches, to work together for this aim.

Until such a time as the authorities do something constructive about the literally tens of thousands of plastic drinking water bottles which litter evry nook and cranny of the Gozitan coastline, there is no possible way that Gozo can claim Blue Flag status for any of its beaches regardless of the chemical cleanliness of the waters.
