An art exhibition by Henry Alamango opens on the 15th of November and runs until the 6th of December, at the Banca Giuratale, Independence Square, Victoria. The exhibition will be inaugurated by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono.
"Brushworks" is Henry Alamango's fifth solo art exhibition. Henry's art is largely representational and is inspired primarily by Mediterranean landscapes and seascapes.
This year's edition includes, in the main, watercolours and ink, with some pastel and acrylics. Local scenes and cafe-life are complemented by some works featuring the vibrant colours of Morocco.
Henry Alamango is a self-taught artist who has forever loved to transfer, through paint onto paper, the love of nature that is etched in his upbringing. However, it was not until relatively recently that he has thrown himself into the art-scene, with a little discipline and a lot of enthusiasm.
Whilst Henry has travelled widely and loves to paint during his brief trips to Africa, the Caribbean and the East, his representational art is rooted in a love of all things Mediterranean, with particularly strong impressions of the Maltese Islands. Warm Mediterranean light and stone, cobalt seas and an abundance of colourful paraphernalia are profusely represented in his paintings. Watercolour remains the artist's primary medium. The difficulty in mastering this technique is rewarded by the atmospherics, the diffusion of light and the soft tones that convey a serenity throughout much of his art. On the other hand, Henry is also committed to incorporating other media or using these exclUSively to better convey the character of the subject or theme being represented. Hence his more recent forays into inks, acrylics, pastel and gesso, with occasional touches of gouache.
The fact that Henry's art is largely representational in no way diminishes the importance he attaches to colour and tones. Indeed, he is firmly of the opinion that, whilst admirers and clients might relate to a particular subject or scene, it is ultimately the colour, tones and their treatment that are at work in striking the viewer's emotive chords.
Over recent years, Henry Alamango has held five solo exhibitions:
(2004) Retreats and Havens
(2005) Hues and Tones
(2006) Tribute to aSea
(2007) Kaleidoscope
(2008) Brushworks
Additionally, together with his fellow-artists in Malta, he continues to participate in a number of collective exhibitions that dot the cultural calendar.
Brushworks (2008) represents Henry's stronger thrust into alternative themes, materials and presentation methods.
