Following the success achieved through an orientation visit programme involving the collaboration of the Gozo College administration, during which over 1200 Gozitan students participated in orientation visits to the Gozo Public Library, this invitation was renewed to all Head of Schools in Gozo at the start of the current scholastic year. The first visit in this year's programme was held on Tuesday 8th October 2008, for which students attending Year 6 at Mattew Sultana Primary School in Xaghra, visited the Public library in Vajringa Street, Victoria.
In his introductory speech, a library official explained the aim of these visits, giving details of the various library facilities while he stressed the importance for students to start getting familiar with reading from a young age. The various questions asked by the students about the services offered, witnessed the interest fostered through this activity. Moreover, the students were given the opportunity to participate through prose and poetry reading, and also through playing musical instruments such as the piano and violin. About forty students were accompanied by teachers and some of their parents.
Other similar visits by various students presently attending primary and secondary schools within the Gozo College, are planned to be held in the coming months. This is an effective means through which students familiarise themselves with the Gozo Public Library. Moreover, they will become more aware of the services offered both in printed and electronic versions as well as through the services of the staff deployed in this section, the coordination of which falls within the remit of the Ministry for Gozo.
