Offer someone a finger and they take the whole hand

Offer someone a finger and they take the whole handReaders Letter – The fact that the Hondoq quay repair saga seems to have come to an end is welcome news for everyone, especially the people who enjoy using the area so much.

The Gatt brothers did a good job and as I said before they are to be congratulated, but it now appears that Hondoq has another problem.

I was with friends the other night who have just returned from a holiday in Gozo and I had particularly asked them to pay a visit to Hondoq and take some photographs for me. The above picture is one of them. It shows plastic deck chairs, umbrellas, signs for boat trips etc all over the area which has just been repaired.

What doesn’t show in this photo, but which my friends have told me about, is a speedboat moored at the area of quay which was repaired and big signs on the railings for boat trips to Comino, which obstruct the view. So where has all this clutter come from? Does it belong to the people who run the kiosk at Hondoq? I’m told that at night the area around the kiosk contains several boats, a caravan, canoes, banana boats, vans, cars, etc. The whole area has been taken over. Has a licence been issued for this to happen?

A lot of people are bringing caravans down to the bay and taking up a lot of space. It seems that every person with a caravan stakes out their own little territory, which they seem to think is their personal property.

I think it’s time that the Ministry comes clean regarding its intentions for the Hondoq area. The Minister for Gozo has in the past shown her support for a marina development, this would amount to environmental rape. Is this still the case or is she now going to throw her weight behind the people she is supposed to be representing?

It is also time that the Ministry took the area back for the people as it is obvious that what is happening there now is becoming abusive. The Maltese have a saying that you offer someone a finger and they take the whole hand, which seems very appropriate in this case.

Mr Tyrrell you are spot on on this.

Who gave this guy the right to do whatever he wants at the expense of others

  2. James A. Tyrrell,

A simple Google search, reveals numerous pages of comments you have made in the past, regarding Malta and Gozo.

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22James+A.+Tyrrell%22+larne&btnG=Search&meta=

However, I cannot find one comment you have made in your local newspaper about your hometown of Larne http://www.larnetimes.co.uk/

Why do you persist week in week out, writing to Malta newspapers and Gozonews picking holes in everything?

    @John Edwards

Is Mr Tyrrell telling the truth ?

We all should be gratefull for his interest to save our environment. Perhaps Mr Edwards you can point out to us what articles you didn’t like so we can verify them.

I suspect that Mr Tyrells concern about Gozo has some hidden agenda. If I were him my deepest concern should be about my country and not on others. I fear that his main interest is that progress in Gozo is freezed. If Mr Tyrell is truly concerned about Gozo he should make his best to find investment to eradicate the poor unemployment in our island. I hope to hear from you soon about this last topic.

@John Edwards and Carmel. You are quite right John. I used to write on a regular basis for the Larne Times but I no longer bother for the simple reason that I couldn’t care less if the town slid into the sea tomorrow. I lived through the troubles in N. Ireland and for part of that time I was a serving police officer. I should point out that I’m referring to the real police force, which was the RUC, not the useless bunch who are in the job now. We lost over 600 members to Republican terrorists and then our illustrious British Government negotiated a peace deal otherwise known as a surrender to murdering scum. The afore mentioned murdering scum were then put into Government at which point I lost interest in anything which happens in this country.

Leading on from that yes Carmel I do have a hidden agenda. When I retire I want to come and live in Gozo. In order to do that it would be nice if there was some of the island left to enjoy. Perhaps you would prefer the continuous destruction of what little land there is left for the benefit of those amongst you who are rich enough not to care and will probably abandon Gozo once they have milked every penny they can from it.

Perhaps now that I have explained this you and John can explain exactly what your hidden agendas are?

Got to hand it to you James I feel the same, I to have an interest in Gozo and have already invested onto the island with my intention of settling their once I retire, but the way things are going Gozo will just be another Island with a concrete jungle sat on top of it, but then we could all move to Comino!!!!!(that was a joke) John and Carmel, without outside interest regarding Gozo how could you ever get the support you need with certain ongoing topics. I am sure 100% population of Gozo did not vote for the Azure Window to be one of Natures Top Wonders of the world, or are you going to prove me wrong, did you vote??? I did. back to you both

  7. So what you are saying, is that unless you keep commenting on you’re clapped out keyboards 1500 miles away, Gozo is finished?

    Typical condescending British know alls.

You take Gozitans to be fools and unable to run their own affairs in their own way.

  8. John Proffitt-White

Not at all. As I mentioned I have invested into Gozo and keep on doing so every year, several times a year by coming over and spending my euro’s on Gozo and building up a relationship with my neighbours and the local community. What part of John Edwards is Gozitan? You must be sat in a rut with no where to go if words like your above comment have anything to go by and you still did not answer referring to the Voting of the Azure Window, which tells me something!!

  9. Swimmer

    @ John Edwards

I am a truly Gozitan and what our British and N. Ireland friends are telling us is THE FULL TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH.

Do you live in Gozo? have you been hearing how permits are being issued in ODZ areas? And what about all the HOT applications like Ramla Hamra, Nadur Cemetery and Hondoq just to name a few?

Are all these doing GOOD OR HARM to the Gozo economy? You will probably tell me yes……

  10. James A. Tyrrell

@John Edwards. Tell me John are you yourself Gozitan? If the answer to that is yes can you tell me why you have a problem with people supporting the protection of the islands environment and history? Please answer that question John, as I would love to know? Perhaps you prefer it if tourists come to the island and take no interest in it whatsoever and then come back home and gripe about their holiday from hell in the papers.

I suspect John that you have something you were accusing me off, a hidden agenda. Perhaps you are a developer, or an architect, or a kiosk owner or a friend of one of these whom I have written about in the past. Perhaps you have a problem with my writing in support of certain NGO\’s. Then again perhaps you just have a problem with the fact that someone from so far away seems to love the island of Gozo more than you do.

  11. I am British but live(and vote)in Gozo. I work and support several NGO’s and charities.

Now that is out of the way, your rantings and ravings as well as false assumptions gets us nowhere near the question I originally asked. You really should stick to facts. There are no hidden agendas on my part.

As for James and John if you are retiring out here someday, you may need this:

  12. John Proffitt-White

John thanks for the link referring to age concern etc however I forgot to tell you I am only 43 and intend to retire by the age of 50(just shows how blinkered you are assuming retiring meant 65+) and come and live in my ONLY property in Europe which happens to be on Gozo. I will continue to support any article I feel requires a comment on even though I am a flight away, however Gozo is where I choose to live and so I will try and protect it in anyway I can. I hope I am not treading on your toes???

  13. James A. Tyrrell

@John Edwards. I wasn’t aware that my comment fell into the category of ranting and raving. You say that I should stick to the facts but I don’t know the facts John, which is why I asked you the question. I’ll ask you again, can you tell me why you have a problem with people supporting the protection of the islands environment and history? Since you seem so upset by my love of the island of Gozo the least you can do is explain why.
