Wednesday evening, a bonfire was lit on St John’s demi-bastion in the Citadel celebrating the Saint’s feast day, reviving an ancient tradition linked to the summer solstice.
For the 2nd consecutive year this forgotten tradition has been once again revived in Gozo by the Gozo Culture Section within the Ministry for Gozo with the organisation of the Il-Hgejjeg ta’ San Gwann event. A programme of activities was held around the bonfire which included traditional singing by Christabelle Curmi and the traditional Gozitan music group.
A historical talk about the origins of this tradition prepared by Gozitan folklore expert Anton F. Attard was also delivered to guests seated around the fire. A sunset buffet meal brought the evening to a conclusion.
This event which is planned to become part of the calendar of events in Gozo, is in line with the culture section’s policy of reviving particularly significant traditions linked to the unique characteristics of the island.
