Dear Mr Walker,
The Ramblers’ Association of Malta was stupefied at your declaration on the issue of the Bahrija Valley development, as broadcasted on various TV stations on the evening of Friday 19th June.
You stated that the initiative to stop works was taken by MEPA upon the instigation of the developer. The least that is expected from an executive in your position is not to be economical with the truth with regards to the NGOs while going to great lengths to portray the developer as the most correct of developers.
You failed to mention, or in any way acknowledge, that my Association asked for the suspension of works by means of a complaint sent directly to the Enforcement Office of MEPA and copied directly to your office on Friday 19th June at 9.15am. Our complaint pointed out that the development method being used on site breached the conditions stipulated by the relevant Restoration Method Statement PA 2835/00/42.
Fortunately the objection was copied to the media and by 10.30am the news was featured on the web sites of Di-ve.com and Maltastar.com. The Complaints office at MEPA also acknowledged promptly.
You failed to mention that my Association asked you to carry out investigations and to proceed with the withdrawal of permit after confirming the major breaches that a crowd of 300 odd witnesses were taken on site and deliberately asked to witness during the protest walk last Thursday 18th June. The breaches, together with the damage already observed to the ecological system as pointed out by Nature Trust Malta on the same morning, are serious enough to justify the withdrawal of permit
You also declared that the NGOs were unfair to state that the permit was issued recently, which is a false statement that we ask you to withdraw.
Mr Walker, on behalf of my Association I request that you confirm the sequence of all the events that led to the MEPA decision to stop works and, for the sake of the little that is left of pristine Maltese countryside, to withdraw the permission for development which should never have been issued.
Alex Vella
Hon Secretary
Ramblers’ Association of Malta.
Editors note: For Mr Walkers further attention, Gozonews.com would also like to point out that yesterdays objection, as mentioned in this letter, was also featured by us at 10.26am yesterday morning.
