PROTEST AGAINST BUILDING YACHT MARINAS IN ST PAUL’S BAY
As an Institute founded to promote and safeguard both the social and cultural aspects of this locality, we feel duty bound to communicate our deep concern and apprehension over the news regarding a development project which in our view constitutes a serious threat to the areas mentioned above.
We have learnt from the news of a ministerial statement announcing the building of a yacht marina in a maritime area of this locale that has been traditionally used for swimming purposes and for seacraft used by locals for reasons related to their and their families’ livelihood.
The Institute recognizes that this is a classical case where local culture is closely related to the practical interests of the inhabitants. The old culture of families who use the area for decent leisure that is also beneficial to their health is under threat. The ministerial statement that announced this threat is not in consonance with other ministerial statements of intent that emphasize the aims of Government to promote health care in the community in line with its recognition of the value of everyday activities in the field of public health. The Institute would like also to suggest, that an effort should be made to extend Xemxija Bay by bringing back the great amount of sand that traditionally embellished it turning it into an adequate site for family entertainment. In the same wise, more space should be allotted to the berthing of luzzijiet and other light seacraft used by fishermen by way of assisting this section of the population.
We seize this opportunity to draw the LC’s attention to the ghastly sight being created by the irresponsible hanging of dirty linen in balconies in Bugibba thereby spoiling the environment. It is our strong view that the LC should take the matter in hand and stop this uncivilized behaviour as soon as possible.
Thank you for your attention.
Best regards.
