|Email item||Print item||
Heritage Malta is once again organising a guided tour of the Mnajdra and Hagar Qim Temples on Saturday 20th, Sunday 21st to mark the summer solstice. The site curators will also be discussing conservation problems related to these UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This will be the first solstice event with the new protective sheltering erected over both Temples.
In a bid to provide an enhanced experience to visitors, only 40 visitors will be allowed to Mnajdra Temples while 10 places will be available for Hagar Qim Temples.
Sunrise on the first day of each season underlines the relationship between the temples and celestial bodies. Although it is not known for certain whether these orientations were intentional, they are so systematic that this is very probable. In prehistoric agricultural societies, observation of the motion of the stars, the moon and sun could have been related to the changing seasons and times of planting and harvesting crops.
Tickets for the solstice event are at Euro 15.00 per person and Euro 10.00 per HM member and are strictly on a first come first served basis. Tickets may be bought from the following sites: Heritage Malta Head Office, Merchants’ Street Valletta, the National Museum of Fine Arts- Valletta, the Roman Domvs-Rabat, Hagar Qim Temples and the Archaeology Museum-Victoria, Gozo. Please call on 22954000 for any queries.
The meeting point will be at 5.30am next to Hagar Qim main entrance.
