MEPA approves full development permit at Tal-Kus

Earlier today, MEPA approved the full development permit for a waste transfer station and a civic amenity site at Tal-Kus, in Xewkija, after the previous meeting had been postponed last week.

The approval was given despite numerous objections over a number of years from the Xewkija and Sannat Local Councils, local Heritage Authorities, and NGOs, who argued that the development was within Mgarr ix-Xini regional park.

The transfer station will cover an area of 13,600 square metres and a four storey building will house a material recycling plant to sort, store and then transfer hazardous and non-hazardous waste to Malta.

Excavations for the building, which have already been carried out, are just a few metres away from important archaeological remains.

The application was approved by all members of the MEPA board with the exception of Labour MP Roderick Galdes.
