The fastest job ever done in Gozo – Readers Letter

The fastest job ever done in Gozo - Readers PhotoWhen I was a lot younger than I am today I can remember hearing the song, ‘The Fastest Milkman in The West’ sung by the famous Benny Hill. If Benny were still alive today he would have the chance to write a new song called, ‘The Fastest Painter in Gozo’.

This week someone decided to write a message to the authorities regarding the damage in Hondoq ir-Rummien. The bright orange message read ‘EU MONEY IN YOUR POCKETS’ and would you believe that within a few hours the message was painted over with black paint by public employees. Everyone was really surprised with the efficiency.

Don’t get me wrong I am not agreeing with vandalism, however what amazes me is that when there is propaganda against the Gozitan authorities everything is done very fast to remove it. But when half the quay is lying in the sea, leaving a hole you could lose Benny’s milk float in, and the seabed is covered in large boulders they couldn’t care less.

If the painter who carried out this express task ever changes his job and takes up construction and repair work the island of Gozo will be a much better place for everyone. I wonder if his name is Ernie?

Mr Tyrrell I went there yesterday and saw that black paint but didn`t know what was hidden behind it, thank you for enlightening me.

People are fed up with the bureaucracy that Hondoq is surrounded with, especially to fix what was damaged.

How long it is going to take the Gozo ministry to fix it?

Swimmer i am also surprised in how quickly the words were covered up but I am also surprised the stones are still there as I am sure there are enough for a small extention to a house or even to start building on the unsightly framework down at dwejra!!!!

When are we going to get a definitive answer to when the Hondoq situation is going to be resolved?Hondoq ir Rummien is a major asset in Gozo’s tourism and it really defies belief that no one is prepared to get things moving!!

The Ministry for Gozo should really be ashamed of itself. The damage should have been repaired weeks ago, no wonder people are getting annoyed and writing nasty messages – nothing else seems to work! The authorities should be happy that only spray paint is used at present and should pull finger and carry out the repairs before someone comes up with the bright idea of using something more dangerous!
Once again it appears that the Ministry for Gozo is unable, or unwilling, to carry out its responsibilities.
I hope that the various rumours circulating are untrue, but there does seem to be an abnormal amount of dithering over these repairs which is never at good sign!

How about the Qala Council? What are they doing?

  7. Paul Buttigieg

    @ St Joseph,

In case you do not know,

If it wasn’t for the pressure the Qala Council and Moviment Harsien Hondoq have made for the last seven years, the Hondoq project would be in full swing by now and I can assure you that a lot of people would not be able to enjoy Hondoq as it is today.

In regards to the damage done in Hondoq after the storms, the Qala Local Council does not have the funds to repair it and it is totally in the hands of the Ministry for Gozo.

Should you want to clarify your claims further, I and the council will be more than happy to explain further in detail.

    Qala Councillor

I have heard recently from a Gozitan friend that repair work is underway via a local contractor. However there may very well be some concerns as to what work was specified in the contract!!I will be over in two weeks and see for myself.
