Monday the 27th of April 2009 saw the start of a new schedule for community radio station Lehen il-Belt Victoria; this will lead us to June when we will be preparing for the summer Solemnity. This is called a short schedule since there are no own-produced programmes between 12 and 4pm: Italian Episcopal Conference satellite station Blusat is broadcast, just as happens during the night. In fact, Monday to Saturday, the studio opens for direct transmission from St George’s basilica of the 9am Mass and closes at 8pm with a Thought for the Night (the guest this time being Mgr George N. Cremona, and not Dr Sunny Galea as announced on the printed schedule).
“Religious” programmes are obviously numerous, including the daily 6pm Mass (followed by Eucharistic adoration) and noon Angelus. Lehen il-Kunsill Parrokkjali (“From the Parish Council”) is on Monday, followed by Christian music. Il-Lezzjoni ta’ Toni (a MUSEUM-style exhortation) is on Wednesday, followed by the anniversary-year series on Don Bosco and his Oratory. This day also launches a new appointment with archpriest emeritus Mgr Joseph Farrugia. Can. George J. Frendo continues his introduction on the Fathers of the Church on Thursday, while Friday offers both the magazine presented by the Anglican community and an introduction to Sunday’s liturgy. Can. George Bezzina renews his appointment with the sick and aged on Saturday, while Sunday includes a morning look at news from the Catholic world and afternoon highlights from the Pope’s teachings.
Sundays actually offer a “full” schedule, including afternoon prayers and Vespers. Programmes about traditions, nature and the hobby of reading are spread during the some thirteen hours. Variety programmes, with an emphasis on general information and music, understandably take the lion’s share but a novel is also included (repeats of the extracts broadcast on Tuesday and Thursday). Other “musical” shows air daily, including Eurovision songs (Monday). Moreover Monday offers folklore, Tuesday advice from members of the professions and a studio discussion or interview, Thursday historical themes and Saturday sports. And the popular two-hour after-Mass slot Mondays to Saturdays continues with numerous assorted items.
Yes, LBV is always worth listening to!
