Inbound tourists drop by 21.4% and spending by 21.1%

The latest Tourstat survey data indicates that inbound tourists in March were estimated at 71,153, a decrease of 21.4 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year, and practically unchanged compared to March 2007.

The majority of tourists, or 70,841, came to Malta by air. There was a decrease of 18,229, equivalent to 20.5 per cent, in the number of air tourists. Results also show that 77.1 per cent of inbound tourists came on holiday, while a further 13.2 per cent visited Malta for business purposes.
Meanwhile, total nights spent dropped by 25.5 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2008. Total nights spent in private accommodation decreased by 8.4 per cent, while guest nights in collective accommodation decreased by 29.7 per cent. Total tourist expenditure during the same period was estimated at €44.1 million, down by 29.4 per cent when compared to March 2008.
January-March 2009
Inbound tourists for the first quarter were estimated at 174,039, a decline of 17.8 per cent over the corresponding period in 2008. In absolute terms, the change was mainly attributable to a decrease in holiday visits from the German, British and Spanish markets. On the other hand, increases were recorded in the Italian, Libyan and Russian markets.
87.7 per cent of all inbound visits comprised tourists coming from EU Member States. For the period under review, the majority of inbound tourists chose non-package travel, while the demand for package trips decreased by 24.4 per cent. The largest proportion of inbound passengers were aged between 45 and 64, followed by those in the 25-44 age bracket. Together, these two categories made up 75.0 per cent of total tourists.
In the period under review, total tourist expenditure was estimated at €112.6 million, down by 21.1 per cent when compared to 2008. Decreases were recorded throughout all expenditure categories.
The survey indicated that the per capita total expenditure was estimated at €660, a decrease of 3.5 per cent over the comparable period last year.
