Following the recent issue of tenders in connection with management services for the reconstruction of part of the road leading to Xlendi and that leading to Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, a tender relative to works related with the reconstruction of the Ta’ Pinu road has been issued.
Tenders were published following relative permits issued by MEPA in connection with the reconstruction of this road.
The projects comprising the reconstruction of part of Xlendi Road and the Ta’ Pinu road, incorporate infrastructural works leading to the reconstruction of 2.5km of roads. These projects will benefit from an investment of €8.6 million representing part of the 10% of European Funding specifically addressed for projects in Gozo. The European Regional Development Fund programme 2007-2013 will co-finance 85% of the cost whilst the remaining 15 % will be derived from national funds.
The Minister for Gozo said that these substantial infrastructural road works will signify better accessibility and higher safety standards on the roads in Gozo.
Minister Debono also said that the Department for projects and Development within the Ministry for Gozo, has embarked on a road maintenance programme, following the damage caused by the heavy rainfall during the past months. These works include light maintenance as well as more intensive interventions requiring scarifying and hot asphalt application.
Up to now hot asphalt was applied on part of Hamet Road in Xaghra as well as part of Lunzjata Valley Road, part of Enrico Mizzi Street, By-the-Bastion Road and Taflija Road in Victoria. Similar works are planned to be carried out in Capuchins Street, in Victoria as well as in Qala Road limits of Borg Gharib in Ghajnsielem.
The road patching programme included works in republic Street Victoria, and roads in Nadur and Xaghra together with Qbajjar Road limits of Marsalforn.

How many years have we been hearing about new roads for Gozo? How many have been done so far?
If it wasn’t for the local councils that did the village roads Gozo would be one big pothole except for part of the road in Ghajnsielem and part of the road to Ta’ Pinu.
Twenty five years ago the Xaghra, Xewkija, Qala, Sannat and Nadur roads were all done at once without any trumpets being blown.
I think that many will agree with me that the state of the roads at present is worse than 25 years ago.
Can anyone guess who the contractor is going to be???
It is about time some movement took place regarding the state of Gozo’s roads. As a visitor I only have to put up with them for two weeks a year but I feel sorry for the local people who have these problems all year round. It is definitely not a place for a new car, especially one with little ground clearance!
How is it possible that one kilometre of road can cost 3.4 million euro? Somebody is taking someone for a ride somewhere and getting very rich in the process!
I realise that it is very difficult to make comparisons, but I have just read a report relating to the construction an all-weather road in Wisconsin, America, where one mile of road under the worst conditions would cost approx 303,000 dollars per mile, otherwise 225 dollars per mile.
As for the rest of the roads here they hardly deserve to be called roads at all. I have seen better ones in Swaziland and Botswana, even Mugabe has more pride in his roads than Malta does!
The road which leads from Xewkija all the way down to Hondoq ir-Rummien is a total mess and has been so for (at least) the past 10 to 15 years. Minister for Gozo keeps taking us for a ride every time this point is stressed upon her. First she said that San Lawrenz is in a more derelict state, then the Xlendi road… and when we thought that there wasn’t room for fooling us Qalin around anymore… the Ta Pinu Road cropped up!
Will govt wait for a serious accident to occur before it is given its (way overdue) maintinance??
