Can I direct a question please to the Government in general and to the Gozo minister Giovanna Debono in particular? I have just been in touch with a friend on the island and learned from them that the damaged quay at Hondoq ir-Rummien on Gozo has still not been repaired. What sort of signal does this give to the tourist industry?
As can be seen from the photographs published earlier a lot of boulders have been deposited on the beach, which will obviously need to be cleared away. However what is not immediately obvious from the photographs is the deposition of large boulders under the water particularly at the end of the quay where the children normally dive in. Is the idea here to wait until such times as a child gets seriously injured and then do something about the problem?
When you take this sort of inaction at Hondoq and then consider the rusted concrete eyesore at Dwejra and the destruction of farming land at Nadur you begin to question exactly what the term Eco Gozo means!

It is a great pity that the noble term ‘ecological’ had been misused here in Gozo by those politicians who just believe in slogans and vote catching exercises.
What eco-Gozo really means? :

I agree with you totally.
I have been to Hondoq lately and the dangers are still there. The council has put up signs for people to stay off the pier but everyone is ignoring those signs.
Also as you said it is very very dangerous the way it is at the moment. The only thing that has been done is the removal of the boulders from the sandy area and now they are stacked near the kiosk.
What is the ministry of Gozo waiting for? For someone to get injured seriously or killed?
I definitely would not want something like that on my conscience!!!
Hope something is done soon!!! I hope that the authorities are not dragging their feet to accomodate individuals who want to see less people in Hondoq this summer!!!
As usual Alex thanks for your ongoing interest in trying to save our precious island of Gozo.
The Writer of this article is not well informed as to the meaning of Eco Gozo” The meaning of “Eco Gozo” is a political “Spin” logo created by the Government. It was directed by someone in high goverment circles for the Minister of Gozo use. This “spin” is the authorize logo for the “brush off” for school children and the likes visiting the Gozo ministers office for a educational outing. There is no funding, action or government planning for this so called project. There is no project manager or contact point for this project. The minister uses this logo often for visiting EU and other foreign guest as a “brush off” if they ask about Gozo ecology projects. There was a ministers project meeting about three months ago, but nothing more has been seen or heard. I took a visit to Hondoq last week and found that someone had removed most of the stones from the beach and dumped it all on the parking lot next to the kiosk.
You are all right of course – this poor little island is about to expire from mishandling and abuse.
Unfortunately, unless there is a lot of money in something for someone, nothing gets done on this island. Hondoq has been in this appalling and dangerous state for several weeks now. I realize that it is difficult to carry out repair work during bad weather, but at least the site should be cordoned off for safety reasons. There were hundreds of people visiting the bay on Sunday last and it is just sheer luck that nobody fell into the hole or that the concrete overhang didn’t collapse further.
It is about time that the ‘Eco-Gozo Administration’ lives up to its mighty title!
As for the Nadur tragedy and the Dwerja Disaster – well, all I can say, is that a lot of heads should roll!
This winter the natural disasters at Hondoq Ir-Rummien favoured the government who is reluctant to save it. Hondoq Ir-Rummien is a big prey for greedy preditors who lead the Gonzipn by its nose. The Eco-Gozo is their pocket. They don’t bother to deprive Hondoq ir-Rummien from Gozitans, Maltese and tourists alike.
The authorities acted immediately to erect a sign to warn people going down there of the dangerous conditions existing there. Its a diplomatic tactic to keep away people from seeking Hondoq ir-Rummien for a holiday. September will prove that I am right. So don’t cry about split milk.
