Panayotis Carvounis from the European CommissionThe Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, met the Deputy General Director of the European Commission for Communication, Panayotis Carvounis together with the Head of the European Commission Representation in Malta, Joanna Drake. This encounter was held at the Ministry for Gozo as part of the visiting programme of Panayotis Carvounis in Malta.

The Deputy General Director of the European Commission for Communication visited two projects which were implimented through financial aid from European funds. One of these projects was that of the acquisition and installation of state-of-the-art showcases, which are enabling the exhibition on a permanent basis of unique prehistoric remains which were found in Gozo. Another project was the building of an extension to the Gozo Centre for Arts and Crafts and the building of a new Crafts Incubation Centre in Ghajnsielem.

Whilst accompanying Panayotis Carvounis, the Minister for Gozo explained the significance of these two projects with regards to the preservation and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage on the island of Gozo.

The Deputy General Director of the European Commission for Communication, had the opportunity to admire other artefacts which are exposed at the Archeology Museum within the Citadel. At the Gozo Centre for the Arts and Crafts he could also follow the activities of a number of students while they were attending lessons at several workshops, including those of arts, metal works, stained glass and pottery.

Dr Joanna Drake said that another aim of this visit, was to discuss together with the Ministry for Gozo, the best means to be used, through which the European Commission can offer a more visible assistance to Gozitans on the island itself.
