The Nikolaos is on its way to Malta from Greece to join the Gozo Channel fleet this week, the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana has said.
According to the live tracking the ship is due to arrive at Cirkewwa on Monday morning at around 8am.During the initial announcement regarding the additional Gozo Channel ferry, the Minister said that the the Ro-Ro/passenger ship had been chartered for a definite period, until an international tender is eventually issued to lease a Gozo Channel vessel for a longer period of time and to meet the requirements and restrictions that the ports in Gozo and Malta pose, “due to the fact that the terminals, which were built during PN administrations are only able to accommodate the current Gozo Channel vessels.”
Dr Caruana explained that three of the Gozo Channel ships will be for passengers and vehicles, while the fourth used for cargo, meaning that the ferry schedule can be changed to allow for more frequent crossings and the company will also be in a better position when undertaking maintenance on its other ships,
The Ministry for Gozo said that the Nikolaos went through a full refurbishment process in 2009, when among other things new Caterpillar C32 V12 engines were fitted, they are classified as Euro V emissions standard. It said that the Gaudos, Ta’ Pinu’ and Malita are equipped with engines built in 2000 and which have a level of emissions greater than the Nikolaos.
