Sacred Ordination ceremony taking place at the Gozo Cathedral in June

AOC Q2778VQEThe Sacred Ordination of Fr. Elijah of the Crucified Jesus OCD (Michael Mifsud) of the parish of the Visitation, Gharb, and Mario Mercieca of the Parish of the Assumption Cathedral, Victoria), has been announced by the Diocese of Gozo.

The Diocese, in a statement, said that in preparation for the ordination, a Prayer Vigil will take place on Thursday, the 13th of June, at 8.00pm, at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Victoria.

This will be followed by the celebration on Friday, the 14th of June, at 6.30pm, at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Victoria.

The Diocese said that Michael Mifsud, was born in Gharb, on the 8th of August 1990, the eldest of four siblings. For many years he was an altar server in the Parish of the Visitation, Gharb, where he also attended meetings and vocations at the M.U.S.E.U.M.

He took a theology course at the University of Malta, where after one year he began his vocational journey within the Order of Carmelitni Skalzi. He also assisted in the Community of Saint Theresa of Jesus in Bormla and Birkirkara.

On the 6th of August 2012 he began the novitiate, during which he was given the name Fra Elias of the Crucified Jesus and spent a year as a novice in the Community of Cospicua.

Fra Elijah made his Simple Profession on the 6th of August 2013. Eventually, he went to Brescia, Italy, where he began studies for his formation within the same order at the Convent of San Pietro in Oliveto. When he visited Malta for a few days each summer, he served in the parish of St. John’s Cross, Ta’ Xbiex.

In August 2018, Elijah made his Solemn Profession in the Church of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Cospicua. Then, in September of the same year was ordained deacon by Mgr. Pierantonio Tremolada in Brescia Cathedral. As a deacon he continued the last part of his studies in Brescia.

Mario Mercieca was born in Victoria, on the 27th of February 1993. In June 2012 Mario asked to enter the Seminary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where he completed a year propaedeutics.

He started the course as a seminarian in September 2013. In his intermediate year he joined the parish of Regina Pacis, in the village of Centobuchi, in the Diocese of San Benedetto del Tronto-Ripatransone-Montalto, in central Italy.

Mercieca received the ministry of Lectorate on the 4th of March 2018, at the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, Nadur, and on the 1st of December 2019 was instituted as Akkoltu in the same Basilica, by the Bishop of Gozo Mgr Mario Grech. Then on the 18th of May this year, he was admitted as a candidate for the Priesthood.

Throughout his training, Mario formed his pastoral experience in the parishes of Fontana, Munxar, San Lawrenz and presently Nadur.
