The preliminary results of a pilot study on mirco-grids being carried out in the locality of San Lawrenz, Gozo, were presented by the Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) during the PEGASUS Final Conference organised in the framework of the 28th International Expert Meeting on Power Engineering and held last week in Maribor, Slovenia.
The community of San Lawrenz is one of the main beneficiaries of the PEGASUS project (Promoting Effective Generation and Sustainable USes of Electricity) funded under the Interreg MED Programme. MIEMA is collaborating with the local council of San Lawrenz and the Ministry for Gozo in carrying out a live pilot study related to the design and deployment of community-based micro-grids.
MIEMA explained that the pilot study is based on real-time energy monitoring being carried out in 15 buildings in Gozo whereby data for energy consumption and energy generation through photovoltaic (PV) systems is being collected and analysed.
The aim of the study is to determine economic advantages that may be achieved through the implementation of a community-based micro-grid model, it said.Based on the preliminary results of the study the proposed micro-grid model can provide economic benefits to high energy consumers by reducing the cost of electricity, said MIEMA. “The micro-grid model focuses on the self-consumption of energy produced through renewable sources within the community and can thus also result in reduced distribution losses and enhance the reliability of the local energy supply.”
The event in Maribor, MIEMA said, served as a very good opportunity to promote the results of energy-related projects being carried out in Gozo through the support of European funding.
MIEMA said that it actively provides its support to the Gozo region with respect to energy and environment related projects and regularly organises activities to bring together local stakeholders and the general public.
The agency will be hosting the interregional partners’ meeting for PEGASUS project in Gozo in the beginning of July 2019.
