Qala primary students enjoy an educational day out at Hondoq BayClose your eyes and imagine yourself as a young student learning at the beach! The perfect setting with fascinating natural views as a backdrop, the melody of the sea and fresh air.

All the students attending Gozo College Qala Primary School were recently provided with the opportunity of spending one of their school days at Hondoq Bay, which is part of their village. Preparations started months before and in all thirty activities were planned for the day.

“The main aim of this whole school activity was to become more aware of outdoor spaces in the community and use them to the utmost, whilst taking care to leave them as found not only for the benefit of the flora and fauna, but also for other people who wish to use the bay,” the school said.Qala primary students enjoy an educational day out at Hondoq BaySessions included creating rhythmic melodies, using artistic skills to produce a painting, storytelling, fundamental games, science experiments, trekking along the coast, identifying different wild plants including Widnet il-Bahar, exploring the beach through the GLOBE programme and mathematical reasoning.

The school explained that each class had different stations and the rotation worked out perfectly well. The day started very early with the setting up of the different stations.

The weather was favourable and the older students walked from the school to the beach. “Great bouts of enthusiasm could be felt as the students whispered excitedly and could not wait to arrive in Hondoq,” the school said.Qala primary students enjoy an educational day out at Hondoq BayThere was also keen interest shown in the day’s activities by the parents and relatives who had all been invited to join the day out. The school noted that “two of the secrets for the success of this event were the educators’ motivation throughout, topped with all children’s involvement in the hands on activities.”

The day flew by in an instant and the children’s work, together with the captured photographs, remain as memories. The school added that, however the fondest memories are in the students’ hearts and minds, which will surely remain as on of their best days at school.

They gave special thanks to all the parents who helped, as well as those who attended and joined in the activities prepared. “We cannot forget all the educators who helped us, including those who are not stationed at our school, but whose expertise was fruitful in helping our students enjoy and learn,” the school said.

The transport was sponsored by the EcoGozo within the Ministry for Gozo. “Without these collaborations, such an activity would not have been possible.”

Well done for organising this and was a pleasure to be hosted and educate the beauty of the natural heritage of Gozo to the pupils in line with EcoGozo policy and vision.
