This year’s Victoria International Arts Festival opens on Wednesday, the 12th of June and will see the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra joined by two choirs and talented soloists from Malta and beyond for an epic concert featuring two great German cantatas and J. Vella: Sounds of Celebration, op. 129.
This is the 22nd edition of the Festival, which will run until the 15th of July, with a full programme of events organised in honour of Mro Joseph Vella.
The inaugural concert, which will be held at the Astra Theatre in Victoria, will feature the MPO – with Conductor Matthias Janz, who will be joined by the Symphonischer Choir Hamburg, the Laudate Pueri Choir, Miriam Cauchi (soprano) Claire Massa (alto) Roberto Colavalle (contraltista) Mike Connaire (tenor) Louis Andrew Cassar (baritone) Sönke Tams-Freier (bass).
Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht is a musical setting of a poem by Goethe telling of Druids attempting to continue practising their traditions in the face of growing oppression from Christian rulers.
Orff’s Carmina Burana is based on 24 poems sourced from the eponymous medieval collection, discovered in a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria in 1803. Most poems are in Latin, but some are in old German and French dialects.
Entrance for the concert is free of charge and it starts at 8pm
