The Cittadella Arts Festival 2019 was launched earlier this month at the Spazju Kreattiv in St James Cavalier, Valletta.
This Festival of art music and theatre, will be held between August and September this year, organised by DCapitals Band, in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo, Arts Council Malta (Gozo Cultural Support Programme) and Heritage Malta.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that “everyone acknowledges that Gozo’s cultural aspect has taken a leap forward through the investment by the Ministry in this this sector and with the strong collaboration of the Arts Council Malta.”
Dr Caruana pointed out that the allocation of funds from Arts Council Malta had increased for participants as well as seeing an increase in the number of beneficiaries from these funds.
“Gozo has a talent to be sustained and that is why during this week around € 160,000 was distributed in funding with a substantial amount given to organisations or associations which organise cultural activities,” the Minister said.
She pointed out that these activities are contributing to the island on several fronts, not least in its economy and tourism.
Albert Marshall, Chairman of Arts Council Malta, said the Council is distributing public funds to 11 organisations in Malta and 6 in Gozo in a 3-year partnership.
Mr Marshall urged these organisations to rely not only financial assistance from public funds, but to investigate other ways to attract private sector support.
Russell Muscat, Communications Officer at Heritage Malta, said that when the agency was approached to participate in this festival, it accepted, adding that the primary role of the agency is to bring rich cultural heritage closer to the public.
With this in mind the museums within the Citadel will be open to the public during the Festival, between the 7th and 8th of September.
The Artistic Director of the Festival George Apap explained that this festival is without doubt the largest project undertaken by the DCapitals Band in the five years since it started.
The idea for a festival arose after the band was invited to perform a concert in September 2016 for the inauguration of the restoration work at the Citadel.
Since then, he said, the band has maintained its appointment by each summer holding a large concert with the participation of local and foreign artists.
He explained that the programme will be made up of various activities ranging from music concerts, educational activities, art exhibition, talks and other cultural activities.
